The Center for Research in Molecular Medicine is accepting
applications from candidates for filling several research positions
for working on research programs engaged with Inherited Kidney
Diseases, Chronic Kidney Disease and Diabetic Nephropathy. The
research will be developed in the framework of a Strategic Research
Program that is funded by the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation and
the Structural Funds of the European Union, New Infrastructure/ΣΤΡΑΤΗ/
0308/24. The same program provides for the creation of the first large-
scale Biobank in Cyprus. All positions will be filled within the next
year and they are potentially for three years, renewable every year.
Position 1: Genetics, Genomics, Molecular Epidemiology,
The candidate must have a PhD degree and at least 3 years of
postdoctoral experience, with deep knowledge of molecular biology,
molecular genetics and genomics methodology and able to develop
independent experimental work aimed at identifying new genes and
mutations-genetic variants in primary and modifier genes related to
monogenic or complex kidney diseases in humans. Experience with Genome
Wide Association Studies (GWAS) and genetic epidemiology as well as
knowledge in the use of relevant technology and biostatistics
approaches will be considered as an advantage. The salary is
commensurate with experience and level of expertise, ranging from
2500-2750 euro per month. There is no provision for 13th salary or
medical and pharmaceutical insurance. The selected candidate will be
expected to contribute the employee’s and employer’s part to social
security.
Position 2: Bioinformatics
The candidate must have a PhD degree in Computational Biology/
Bioinformatics or a related field (e.g. computer science, mathematics,
biological sciences), with at least three years of practical training
or working experience in Computational Biology/Bioinformatics. The
individual will work closely with other scientists to (i) investigate
biological questions, (ii) negotiate various data types and tools
available, (iii) design, develop and test data analysis strategies/
pipelines, (iv) make interpretations from the data and (v) derive
hypotheses. The candidate will be expected to make use of our
research environment and the data available for developing additional
independent research in common fields of interest. The role of the
candidate within a multidisciplinary research group will require
significant time management and excellent communication skills, both
oral and written.
A successful candidate is expected to have proven experience in:
Popular state-of-the-art bioinformatics tools, ontologies, data mining
approaches
Databases and tools for sequence, phylogenetic, and structural
analysis.
Software development in at least one of each of the following classes
of languages/environments:
C/C++ or Java,
Commonly used scripting languages, such as Perl, Python, Ruby,
Statistical computing packages, such as R, MATLAB.
The following skills will definitely be considered a plus:
1.Formal or practical training in biological systems of mammals,
preferably humans
2.(Bio)-statistical and quantitative genetics skills
3.Experience with Relational Database Management Systems (e.g.
PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle)
4.Web application development (e.g. CGI, AJAX)
5.Basic system administration skills in UNIX/Linux environments.
The salary is commensurate with experience and level of expertise,
ranging from 2500-2750 euro per month. There is no provision for 13th
salary or medical and pharmaceutical insurance. The selected candidate
will be expected to contribute the employee’s and employer’s part to
social security.
Position 3: Senior Laboratory Research Scientist
The candidate must have a MSc degree in a biological field, preferably
genetics, molecular biology or biochemistry and 3-5 years of work
experience in a research laboratory. The successful applicant will be
expected to take major responsibilities in supporting ongoing and new
research projects in molecular genetics and cell biology. His/her
duties will include DNA/RNA extraction and collection of other
biological samples and archiving, retrieval and electronic database
updating of the Biobank. He/she must be a dynamic individual capable
of taking initiatives and solving problems in a demanding research
environment and reporting to the Coordinator. Any experience in
molecular diagnostics will be considered as an advantage. The salary
is commensurate with experience and level of expertise, ranging from
1600-1800 euro per month. There is no provision for 13th salary or
medical and pharmaceutical insurance. The selected candidate will be
expected to contribute the employee’s and employer’s part to social
security.
Position 4: Laboratory Research Scientist
The candidate must have a BSc or MSc degree in a biological field,
preferably genetics or biochemistry and at least 2 years of work
experience in a research laboratory. The successful applicant will
engage into ongoing and new research projects, related to molecular
nephrogenetics. The salary is commensurate with experience and level
of expertise, ranging from 1400-1600 euro per month. There is no
provision for 13th salary or medical and pharmaceutical insurance. The
selected candidate will be expected to contribute the employee’s and
