Applications are invited for a Fixed Term Three Year Lectureship in Statistics within the Department of Mathematics and Statistics from 1 April 2011.  We are looking for applications from candidates with a promising research record and an interest in statistical methods for use in industry, medicine or social science.  Candidates must be able to contribute significantly to the Department’s teaching and to supervise MSc students.

The Department includes one of the largest and strongest statistics research groups in the UK, with 19 academic staff, 9 research associates, 24 research students and 30 MSc students.  Statistics and OR research at Lancaster attained excellent scores in the 2008 RAE leading to 5th place in terms of HEFCE research income.  The appointment follows the recent launch of an EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Statistics and Operations Research which will stimulate links between statistics and industrial collaborators. The Department is also a component of the MRC North West Hub for Trials Methodology Research and one of the seven nodes of the ESRC National Centre for Research Methods, as well as being involved in many other collaborative projects concerning industry, medicine and social science.

The Department is responsible for a large programme of undergraduate degrees, which have seen a substantial increase in numbers and quality of students over recent years due to a vigorous recruitment policy.  We also run an MSc in Statistics that is supported by studentships from the MRC, NIHR, EPSRC and industry, and contribute statistical modules to other undergraduate and postgraduate degrees across the campus.  The Department provides statistical consultancy for researchers and students in other disciplines and provides a specialist short course programme for participants from within and outside the University.  Lancaster was rated 9th and 3rd in Mathematics according to the latest league tables published by the Times and the Guardian respectively.

Informal enquiries for all posts can be made to:
Professor John Whitehead (j.whitehead@lancaster.ac.uk); Professor Brian Francis (b.francis@lancaster.ac.uk); or Professor Jonathan Tawn (j.tawn@lancaster.ac.uk).
